Leichhardt Aquatic Centre

pdf movie slideshow

The existing Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre was established adjacent the heritage Leichhardt Oval in the early 1960s, and with its combination of a 50m Pool, indoor pool, diving pool and children’s area, became an important part of Sydney’s Inner West community’s sporting life over the decades

BHA reconfigured the proposed masterplan for the Centre as part of our work on the design of Stage 2 to incorporate a state of the art Health Club facility, and new learn to swim indoor facility. Extensive consultation with the existing club and gym members and the general community was undertaken to fully understand the needs of the facility

The new facility was designed to be highly energy efficient, with features such as Mixed Mode air conditioning, solar heating for the pool, earth covered amenities for mass insulating, and the sustainable use of natural lighting and ventilation where possible. Pool filtration systems were selected for their low wastage of water, and stormwater was collected for recycling into toilets and irrigation.

The siting of the new facility allowed for wonderful northern water views from the Centre, One of the primary design goals was to produce a clear operational strategy for the facility which allowed it to be used by patrons directly from outside the Facility while still being able to be accessed and used as part of the full Aquatic Centre without compromising security or access control.
