The Rockdale City Aquatic Centre project has been identified by Rockdale City Council as one of the Major Projects listed in the Rockdale City Plan 2013-2025 to provide a range of recreational, sport and leisure opportunities for the community.
The centre is located at 98C Preddy’s Road, Bexley. This is currently the location of the Bexley Swimming Centre established in 1975. The existing centre accommodates an 8 lane 50m outdoor pool, a teaching pool and toddler’s pool with limited indoor facilities.
In late 2008 Council resolved to investigate "the various measures that can be taken to improve the Bexley Swimming Pool facility and the type of services that can be introduced to improve Bexley Swimming Centre to be of national standing" and provide facilities for all ages.
The proposal includes a new outdoor 50m pool which will be located slightly south of its existing location whilst three new pools will be located within a large indoor pool hall. Supporting the indoor pool hall are a creche, community rooms, kiosk/cafe grandstand and amenities / changerooms.
The pool hall is orientated along the northern boundary running in a east-west direction allowing for the outdoor pool to be located to the south. The new Centre is proposed to be accessed from Preddy’s Road, via two separate carparks. The lower carpark provides access for deliveries and limited undercover carparking whilst the upper carpark is located on the escarpment and is linked via stairs to the main entry foyer.
The orientation of the proposed centre allows greater visibility from Preddy’s Road and maximises its northern orientation whilst reducing its impact on its nearest neighbours.
